Coming out of the spiritual closet

On Human Design, Gene Keys, and the source material I've been studying in the dark

I’ve been keeping a secret.

For the past year, I’ve been devoted to studying a set of systems that have changed the way I understand myself, other people, and how life actually works.

Human Design, Gene Keys, Kabbalah, astrology, and the I Ching.

And I have barely said a word about any of them.

I’ve let the things I’ve learned from these systems quietly inform everything I share — the way I talk about energy, business, decision-making, relationships, community building — but I’ve kept the source material in the background.

Because I had a story in my head that people are going to look at me differently or maybe even invalidate my work if I start talking about energy design. They’re going to decide that I’ve gone too far. That I’ve gone too woo-woo. That I’m not the grounded, practical, logical person they thought I was this whole time.

That story ends today.

It started with Cam.

When we met in February of 2024, something cracked open. I don’t know how else to describe it. We got into a relationship quickly, bought a house quickly, and within months we were having what I can only call soul surgery conversations. Sitting across from each other and going straight to the deepest, most unexamined parts of ourselves.

Why won’t I quit my job? Where does my money scarcity come from? Why is being misunderstood so devastating to me? Why do I wake up every single day and feel like I can’t leave the house without doing my makeup first?

When you have two people who are genuinely committed to growth, and you put them in the same room, there is nowhere to run. Everything surfaces. Every pattern, every wound, every thing you’ve been quietly managing instead of healing. Cam would reflect something back to me and I’d have nowhere to hide, but also real permission to go there with someone who could hold and transmute it.

Four months after we started dating, in July 2024, I quit my job at Meta.

The day I got the keys to this house was the day I put in my resignation.

I’d been crossing my fingers through every round of layoffs, hoping to be let go so that someone else would push me into the unknown. But I’d gotten the highest performance ratings the company offered during my seven years there, so my chances of being laid off were slim to none.

I was forced to bet on myself.

I am so grateful for my time at Meta. And I also know, with total clarity, that I was using maybe fifteen percent of what I’m actually capable of in that company. The rest of my potential was sitting there, unused.

The day I quit was the day I took off the golden handcuffs and ran barefoot into a field of sunflowers, going absolutely feral with joy.

A few months after leaving, I started seeing Instagram reels from a woman talking about something called a “manifesting generator.”

I wasn’t following her. She just kept appearing. And every time she described this particular concept, I felt a specific pang in my chest, like when you’re reading something that totally calls you out.

She was narrating my life.

I told myself: if I generate a Human Design chart and it says I’m a manifesting generator, I’ll learn more. So I pulled up my free chart — all you need is your birth date, time, and location — and there it was.

Manifesting Generator.

I went down the rabbit hole immediately and purchased her private coaching program. I did an eight-week deep dive into my own chart and watched years of self-judgment dissolve in real time.

Here’s one small example of what I mean:

My whole life, I’ve said yes to things in the moment and then changed my mind when the day arrives. A birthday party, a dinner, an event I genuinely wanted to go to when I agreed… and then the day comes and I just can’t. I’ve spent years feeling like something is wrong with me. Like I’m flaky and unreliable. Like I mean well, but I can’t be counted on.

What I learned through Human Design is that I have emotional authority.

Which means, simply, that I do not have access to truth in the present moment. There is no clarity for me right now, in this conversation, in this text exchange where you’re asking me to commit to something. My yes in the moment is a maybe that needs to be slept on, felt into, and given a few days to settle before it’s actually mine.

The moment I understood this, I stopped apologizing for it.

I learned to say: “Let me sit with this and get back to you.” And then I let them know my answer days later, when the emotional water is clear.

That one piece of wisdom has transformed my relationships, my commitments, and the way I make decisions in business.

To learn more about Human Design, I recommend creating your chart here, getting this book, and listening to the early episodes of this podcast; search for the words in your chart and the right episodes will pop up. Start with understanding your Type, Strategy, and Authority.

When it comes to specific guides, I resonate most with Jenna Zoe + Dana and Shayna of DayLuna; both have incredible podcasts you can dive into.

Then came Gene Keys.
